What Happens After a Suspension?

In many cases, a suspended license is automatically reinstated at the end of the suspension period once you pay the reinstatement fee to the Illinois Secretary of State. However, you do not have to wait it out. Depending on why your license was suspended, you may be able to:

• Resolve the underlying issue that caused the suspension (for example, paying outstanding fines or satisfying a child support obligation)
• Apply for a Restricted Driving Permit (RDP), which allows limited driving for essential purposes such as work, school, and medical appointments
• Attend a Secretary of State informal hearing to seek early reinstatement or driving relief

Even before your suspension period ends, you may be eligible for a Restricted Driving Permit if losing your driving privileges creates an undue hardship for you or your family. An RDP allows you to drive to specific locations such as your workplace, school, or healthcare provider.
